About The Book

Exposition: The Exposition begins with a prince being held in a jail. The prince is summoned to see the evil Emperor Maldor. He speaks the Word that is supposed to bring about Maldor's undoing, but it fails because Maldor had used a decoy to speak to the prince. It ends with the prince swearing never to join the evil emperor, and being led off to the torture area.

Conflict: The internal conflict is whether Jason and Rachel should focus on finding a way home or focusing on defeating Maldor. The External Conflict is Jason and Rachel seeking to obtain the Word and defeat Maldor.

Rising Action: The Rising Action is when Jason and Rachel have numerous setbacks, namely being betrayed by Ferrin, being captured by a sheriff, having people that Jason talked to being killed, and when Jason falls asleep on watch and nearly gets himself and Rachel killed.

Climax: The climax is when Jason scores a major victory against the Chancellor of Treinscourt in a duel of riddles. He needs to defeat the chancellor because a syllable of the Word(A word that can unmake Maldor.) is hidden in the safe of Treinscourt, which is impossible to break into, and only the chancellor and the regent can access it. Jason wins the duel and obtains the syllable, surviving an assassination attempt by Copernum, the former chancellor. The Climax ends with Jason and Rachel obtaining half of the syllables that make up the Word.

Falling Action: The falling action is when they meet up with an Amar Kabal(A being whose life is dependent on a seed in the back of their neck. They have more strength then regular humans. They also have more than one life. To come back to life, one needs to plant their Amar, or seed.) named Jasher. They collect the rest of the word, and escape from the previously inescapable fortress named Harthenham with three others, Drake, Tristan, and Tark.  However, Jasher is killed by a Harthenham guard when a grenade explodes between them , which  burnt him and the guard, Kimp,  to a crisp, and Tristan was killed by tracking hounds while trying to save the others. Drake, Tark and Rachel escape, but Jason is captured.   The falling action ends with Rachel heads away and seeks to evade her pursuers. Jason is being led  toward the capital of Lyrian to be interrogated by Maldor, while Rachel simply lies in wait in case Jason doesn't get an audience with Maldor or the Word somehow fails.

Resolution- The resolution begins when Jason  is rescued by Drake. He and Drake sneak into the capital, Felrook.  Jason attempts to ring a gong surrounded by guards, which would grant him an audience with the Emperor. Drake causes a distraction, and Jason rings the gong and is admitted into the court of the emperor. He shouts the Word in the presence of Maldor, but nothing happens. After a brief minute of awkwardness, Jason is led away, without a struggle, to a cell, where he is met shortly by Maldor. Maldor reveals that the Word is a hoax, it can unmake another wizard, not Maldor. He devised this brilliant scheme to keep his greatest enemies at bay chasing after a false hope. Maldor offers Jason the chance to join his inner circle, but Jason refuses. Then Maldor hands Jason over to his tormentors so that all memory of the Word would be erased from his mind. After a few days, Ferrin, who even though was spying on Jason and Rachel on behalf of Maldor, had bonded with Jason and then decided to help him get away and back to Earth. Ferrin breaks him out of the prison in Felrook, and leads him to a lake which leads to Earth. Jason tries to escape and warn Rachel about the true nature of the Word, but Ferrin catches him(He's still loyal to the emperor, he just doesn't want Jason to be tortured.) Ferrin ties a rock to Jason's ankles and Jason sinks to the bottom and back to Earth. The book ends with Jason deciding to find a way back to Lyrian to warn Rachel and the others about the hoax.

Mood

The mood starts out Dark, gets better as they have many successes, then gets darker when Jason is captured.

Recommendation

"This is a great book, I would recommend it because it is interesting, suspenseful, and the ending leaves you wanting more. It's the one of the best books Brandon Mull has ever written. It is action packed while not being unrealistic because no teenager would take to fighting so quickly and easily. " -- Aryan Singh, Hudson Ma.

Theme-The theme is courage because the protagonists have to decide whether to stay and overthrow the Emperor or search for a way home.
